Kampung Empasek needs your help

On 18.11.2007, members from the New Century Lions Club of Kuching Emerald left at the crack of dawn (to me anyway, i was barely awake when i got into the car) to visit Kpg. Empasek.

Kpg. Empasek is located in the Balai Ringin area (Sarawak, Malaysia), about an hour's drive out of Serian town. The site visit to the Kampung was part of our Club's Rural outreach/poor family series of projects.

The Kpg. consists of 11 families, total of about 61 residents. These families 'relocated' here when their old Kpg at Batang Ai was turned into a dam and no, Waterworld was not an option.

Mostly farmers - padi, pepper - and subsist mainly on their crops. Cash-wise, on average, the families earn less than RM150 a month. No electricity or running water. Their source of water = rain water and river. The river water has become rather 'iffy' ever since some of the surrounding areas were 'developed' into cash crop plantations. According to our guide, the river has since turned an interesting colour and quality and even the local river fishies have migrated.

This project will be carried out in 3 stages. Donation in cash or kind greatly welcomed.You will get a receipt for your cash donation. Tentative cut-off date for donation: 7.12.2007 (Friday). This is due to the time constraint. We need time to purchase and pack the items.
